CBD and Nicotine: Can CBD Help You Quit Smoking?

Can CBD help with nicotine addiction? According to a recent study on CBD and nicotine, CBD shows potential for helping you quit smoking or at least helping you smoke fewer cigarettes.

The new research examined how CBD could potentially help smokers curb their habit. This new study follows research highlighting the potential benefits of THCV for nicotine and other addictions as well as other CBD research

CBD alters nicotine metabolism

The study on CBD and nicotine was conducted by Washington State University and announced in this press release. It tested the effects of CBD and its major metabolite on human liver tissue. The results showed that CBD inhibited a key enzyme for nicotine metabolism

Study results say: “For the nicotine-addicted, slowing metabolism of the drug could allow them to wait before feeling the need to inhale more of it along with all the other harmful things found in cigarette smoke.”

Although more research in humans and to decide exact amounts of CBD for nicotine addiction, the study shows a lot of promise, said Philip Lazarus, Washington State University professor of pharmaceutical sciences.

“The whole mission is to decrease harm from smoking, which is not from the nicotine per se, but all the carcinogens and other chemicals that are in tobacco smoke,” he said.

Lazarus is the senior author on the CBD and nicotine study published in the journal Chemical Research in Toxicology. “If we can minimize that harm, it would be a great thing for human health,” he said.

Smoking Kills One In 5 Americans

Although cigarette smoking has declined in recent years, cigarettes are still a major health problem in the United States. In fact, one in five people in the U.S. die each year from smoking-related causes.

Interestingly, the study found that only low levels of CBD are needed to see potent effects for quitting or reducing smoking. The researchers are now developing larger clinical trials on CBD and nicotine addiction.
