Why Do Cannabinoids Feel So Different? THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV & CBDV Explained

Cannabis contains more than 100 cannabinoids, but they don't all produce the same effects.

THC is famous for its euphoric effects. CBD is generally associated with stress releif, calm and balance. THCV has attracted attention for energy, focus and appetite control. CBG is increasingly popular in products for physical comfort and wellness. CBN is commonly used in nighttime products, while CBC is showing up in formulations designed around mood.

So how can cannabinoids that come from the same plant feel so different?

The answer starts with their chemical structures—and how those structures influence the way each cannabinoid interacts with receptors and signaling systems throughout the body.

What Are Rare Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants.

You may already be familiar with THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), but they're only two members of a much larger cannabinoid family.

Other cannabinoids include:

  • CBG — cannabigerol
  • CBN — cannabinol

  • THCV — tetrahydrocannabivarin

Although their molecular structures can be remarkably similar, even relatively small structural differences can affect how they behave in the body.

That's why choosing a cannabinoid isn't simply about choosing “hemp” or “cannabis.” The particular cannabinoid, amount, formulation and combination of cannabinoids can all matter.

Why Do Different Cannabinoids Have Different Effects?

One of the most important systems involved in cannabinoid activity is the endocannabinoid system, or ECS.

The human body naturally produces its own signaling molecules called endocannabinoids. Along with cannabinoid receptors and enzymes, these form a complex signaling system involved in numerous physiological processes.

Two of the best-known cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2.

THC interacts strongly with CB1 receptors, particularly those in the central nervous system. This is an important reason THC can produce its characteristic intoxicating effects.

But other cannabinoids don't necessarily behave like THC.

Some have much weaker affinity for these receptors. Others may influence cannabinoid signaling indirectly or interact with entirely different receptors and biological pathways.

That's where things get interesting.

THC, or delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is probably the world’s best-known cannabinoid—and one of the most noticeable in how it can change the way you feel.

THC is particularly valued for its mental lift. Depending on the amount and the cannabinoids it’s paired with, it can create feelings of euphoria, relaxation, enhanced mood and an overall sense of feeling good.

And with THC, dose matters. A small amount can create a very different experience from a larger serving.

So does the cannabinoid combination.

THCV: Similar Name, Very Different Cannabinoid

THCV stands for tetrahydrocannabivarin.

CBG: The “Mother Cannabinoid”

CBG stands for cannabigerol.

You may have heard it described as the “mother cannabinoid.” That's because CBGA, the acidic precursor to CBG, is used by the cannabis plant to produce precursors of several other major cannabinoids.

CBG itself is generally considered non-intoxicating.

It has become increasingly popular in products designed around physical comfort, recovery and general wellness, including gummies, tinctures and topicals.

And CBG research is beginning to move beyond animal and laboratory studies.

CBG is also particularly interesting in topical formulations, where it can be combined with CBD, THC and botanical ingredients for targeted application.

CBC Cannabinoid: Mood & Anandamide

CBC, or cannabichromene, receives far less attention than THC, CBD or even CBG—but it has become particularly interesting in research around mood and the endocannabinoid system.

One reason is its potential relationship with anandamide, a naturally occurring endocannabinoid sometimes nicknamed the “bliss molecule.” Anandamide is involved in processes related to mood, pleasure and feelings of well-being.

Early laboratory research suggests CBC may influence how the body handles anandamide, potentially allowing more of this naturally produced endocannabinoid to remain available. Research into CBC is still developing, however, and much of what we know comes from preclinical studies.

CBN: The Cannabinoid for Sleep & Nighttime Relaxation

CBN, or cannabinol, is best known as the cannabinoid associated with sleep, rest and nighttime relaxation.

CBN forms naturally as THC ages and breaks down, but unlike THC, CBN does not produce a mental high. Instead, its effects are generally described as calming and deeply relaxing, which is why CBN has become such a popular ingredient in nighttime cannabinoid formulas.
